It was only towards the end of the second session
that there were any significant happenings.

Bocchi came to rest in 3©.
South led the ¨K and
when declarer ducked he switched to a trump. Bocchi went up with the
ace, cashed the ¨A, the
§A and ruffed a club.
He ruffed a diamond and played the jack of spades. North ducked, ready
to play the ace on the next round and give his partner a ruff, but declarer
ruffed a club, removing North's exit card and played the ©Q.
North could cash two trumps, but then had to give declarer a second
spade trick. His partner had a chance to show his skill on the next
deal.

led a heart, resolving the situation at once. 13 tricks and +1460.

North led a club, and after winning with the ace,
declarer cashed the ©K,
and then played one to the nine, a perfect safety play to guard against
©Q10 8 7 with North.

This requires some explanation!
The hand you see was Board 22, but was put into
Board 21, where North is the dealer, and North-South are vulnerable.
So Tuszynski did not open out of turn, and Jassem did not turn down
a possible penalty against vulnerable opponents. 5©
would have cost 300 - that was what happened at the other table - and
of course declarer had to lose one club and two diamonds.

How do you play a double of 2ª
in this situation? Some like it to show support, others a top card in
spades, with the idea of being more helpful about the lead. Notice that
East was not so kind as to double 5§
- pointless when he was sure to be on lead. Declarer's 50% chance did
not pay off.

was alerted as showing the §K
and a diamond control. As East contemplated his lead, dummy peeked at
declarer's cards and proceeded to abuse him for not bidding the slam
as he must have known from West's double that his §K
was well placed. Finally East lead the ªJ
and after a moment's reflection he claimed six, whereupon East disabused
him of this belief by putting the §A
on his king.

is an excellent save, costing only 800, especially as 7§
is rather trivial. Of course, it is almost imposible for East-West to
appreciate they have a twelve card fit!

2§ promised at least 4-4 in the majors with at
least four points. Who knows what West should bid in the face of that?
Declarer had no trouble collecting all the tricks, +1150, and 8 IMPs,
too little to late for Poland, who must be wondering what they have
to do to to defeat Italy.
