 • The Championships

The Opening Ceremony will be on Saturday 22 October 2005, at the invitation of the Mayor of Cascais.

The Bermuda Bowl & Venice Cup Round Robin will start on Sunday 23 and finish on Saturday 29, with the final knock-out stages starting on Sunday 30.

The Seniors Bowl will also start with a Round Robin on Sunday 23 and finish on Saturday 29, with a knock-out stage starting on Sunday 30 with a quarterfinal, semifinal and a final the following week.

In these three events the quarterfinal will end before the start of the Transnational Open Teams on Monday 31 October, allowing people who want to play this event to be free on time.

The Closing Ceremony, which will include the prize giving, a victory banquet and a first class musical show, will take place on Saturday 5 November in the Estoril Casino.

 • The World Transnational Open Teams

The 5th World Transnational Open Teams Championship is a prestigious and most enjoyable event. Being transnational, it is open to teams composed of players coming from different countries, nominated by their National Bridge Organisation and approved by the WBF Credentials Committee.

It is a great opportunity for players to participate in a wonderful bridge tournament while at the same time having a unique opportunity to experience all the atmosphere and excitement of the final stages of the Bermuda Bowl and Venice Cup and watch some of the greatest players in the world on the first class vugraph presentation. Players wishing to compete in this championship should contact their NBO and request nomination by the end of July 2005. There is no quota, and NBOs may nominate as many teams as they wish to compete in this great tournament.

Players eliminated from the Round Robin of the Bermuda Bowl and Venice Cup, as well as those from the Seniors Bowl will be able to enter the World Transnational Open Teams free of charge.

The World Transnational Open Teams will take place during the second week, starting in the late afternoon on Monday 31 October. The format will be Swiss Teams. It is normally played as 10-board matches (3, 4 or 5 per day) for 15 qualifying rounds (150 boards). The Quarterfinal will start on Thursday late afternoon, the Semifinal will be played on Friday 4 November and the Final will end on Saturday 5 November.

 • Systems

Bermuda Bowl and Venice Cup

The WBF Systems Policy (available from the WBF Website at www.worldbridge.org) forms part of the Conditions of Contest for all World Championships. The complete regulations (General and Supplemental) will be published in full in due course, and will be available on the WBF Website. The regulations will include the following requirements:

During the Round Robin stage of the Bermuda Bowl and Venice Cup

° If the matches are 16 boards or fewer, HUM systems and Brown Sticker Conventions will be prohibited.
°
If the matches are longer (17-20 boards)

HUM systems are still prohibited
Brown Sticker Conventions will be permitted, with a maximum of three per pair

During the Knockout stage of the Bermuda Bowl and Venice Cup
HUM systems or Brown Sticker Conventions will be authorized for use in the knockout stage in both the Bermuda Bowl and Venice Cup provided additional, separate convention cards, including proposed defences are submitted in full accordance with the systems regulations published in the Supplemental Conditions of Contest.

Special seating restrictions will be in force for pairs using Brown Sticker Conventions or HUM Systems at any stage.

All systems must be registered with Anna Gudge (anna@ecats.co.uk) by 15 August 2005. They must be sent electronically in the required format, details of which are available at www.ecatsbridge.com. Any partnerships not complying with this requirement may be required to use the World Standard Card for the entire Round Robin phase to avoid arbitrary prejudice to certain teams and ensure a level playing field. Furthermore, no HUM systems or Brown Sticker Conventions will be permitted for offending pairs for the duration of the Championship.

All cards that include Brown Sticker Conventions for use in the knockout stages must be submitted using the designated form, with full disclosure being made at the time of the first submission. They must be accompanied by a viable and thorough suggested defence, including advances over initial actions and thorough development of actions over multi-meaning continuations by the Brown Sticker Convention user’s side.

Any HUM system must be accompanied by a full copy of the system in English; the Convention Card and Supplementary sheets must comply with the requirements for full disclosure.

Failure to comply with the above requirements concerning Brown Sticker Conventions and HUM systems will result in the pair or pairs not being permitted to play these conventions/systems and may include Victory Point penalties.

Seniors Bowl and World Transnational Open Teams

The World Seniors Bowl and the World Transnational Open Teams are Category 3 events and no HUM Systems or Brown Sticker Conventions are permitted. There will be a requirement for Red Sticker systems to be registered in advance no later than 30 August 2005. Failure to submit such systems in advance shall result in the pair not being permitted to play such systems.

The Conditions of Contest will give full details of systems regulations and registration, but players should note that it will be a requirement that all systems are registered in advance via e mail to Anna Gudge: anna@ecats.co.uk
