MORE ABOUT BERMUDA

Climate
The Gulf Stream, which flows between Bermuda and the North American continent, keeps the climate temperate—not too hot, not too cold. From mid-December to late March, the island normally offers Spring-like temperatures, with an average high of 70 F (21 C) dropping to the low 60s F (15-18 C) in the evening.

Bermuda has no distinct rainy season. Although showers may be heavy at times, the skies usually clear quickly and the weather rarely interferes with outdoor sports and recreation.

Clothing
Visitors may wish to be aware that Bermuda's atmosphere, and that of its visitor accommodation, tends to be one of British reserve and dignified informality. It is therefore a good rule of thumb to dress conservatively.

Communications
Bermuda enjoys excellent international telephone, facsimile, cable and telex services. Telephone charges may be reversed or charged to a calling card. You can direct dial to and from Bermuda world-wide. Bermuda's country code is +(1) 441. Airmail leaves and arrives daily, and various courier companies are represented.

Currency
The local currency is the Bermuda Dollar. As this is pegged to the US dollar on a one to one basis, US dollars are accepted everywhere at equal (face) value. Other foreign currencies are not accepted but may be exchanged at local banks at rates that are set daily. US dollar travellers checks are widely accepted.

Major credit cards are accepted at virtually every store, most restaurants and hotels, and may be used for cash advances at all local bank branches. In addition, there are ATM machines linked to the MasterCard/Cirrus and VISA/Plus systems for cash withdrawals.

Drugs
Bermuda is very concerned about the scourge of drugs and the negative impact they can have on the local community. As a result it is a criminal offence to import or be in possession of unlawful drugs (including marijuana). We urge visitors not to try to import into Bermuda any drugs, as such action could cause embarrassment at the airport.

Electricity
Local outlets provide 110 volts, 60 cycles AC.

Firearms
Please note that it is a serious criminal offence to import firearms or ammunition into Bermuda without a licence granted by the Commissioner of Police.

Transportation
Traffic drives on the left-hand side of the road, with a speed limit of 35 kilometers (22 miles) per hour. There are no drive-yourself-cars for hire but it is easy for visitors get around by taxi, bus, ferry or moped. To drive a moped you must be 16 years or older and must wear a safety helmet, but do not require a driver's licence.

There are plenty of taxis, and they may be hired by the hour, day or mile. All taxis are metered and the tariff is fixed by law. The rate is per cab rather than per passenger (up to a maximum of 6 passengers). Qualified "Blue Flag" taxi tour guides are available on request for touring, and there are special all-inclusive pre-sold tours vary in price per person.

Time Zone
The standard time in Bermuda is Greenwich Mean Time minus four hours.
