The buffet

As you can see from the photo we are certainly feeding our kids well here and I would say it is one of the best venues and facilities imaginable.

Wake up to the sun streaming into my room only to watch the day turn dark, cloudy and rainy late in the afternoon. The good news is that the Bulletin Room is in the basement so no windows and the weather really doesn’t matter to us.

Internet is often hit and miss depending on how good the connection is, how good the country’s infrastructure etc. is and finally how well the system has been set up. Here in Opatija I would give it a 7 out of 10 as it does sometimes drop out, but overall it works well enough for me to chat with family and friends, get my photos to the webmaster and to get most things done one time.

So here we are with play having started in all four divisions of the Pairs Championships. World Titles are on the line in Juniors (Born 1990 onwards - 37 Pairs), Youngsters (Born 1995 Onwards - 21 Pairs), Girls (Born 1990 onwards - 23 Pairs) and Kids (Born 2000 Onwards - 41 Pairs) – so 61 tables in play for the next few days.

I am writing this having written up six pages of hands from the pair that I watched in the first 3 “mini” sessions (9 boards each) of five being played today. Being a bridge journalist is very hit and miss. Sometimes you watch a pair for two sessions and are lucky if there are any good hands, I don’t mean great hands just good hands to write up. But sometimes you are very lucky and there are either good or exciting hands one after the other. The first half of today was such a session. There was great bidding, great defence and even some good declarer play – in fact by the time I finished I could have written a lot more.

If you want to keep up with all the results then here is the best starting point:

There are three playing areas while not immediately next to each other they are all quite proximate to each other. After finishing my article I called in on the Kids playing area and I saw the future of the game of bridge – just have a look.

the kids loving it

Well not too much else I can tell you from here right now so chat again tomorrow.
