The 1997 Bermuda Bowl and Venice Cup will be held in Tunisia, in the exclusive coastal resort of Hammamet. The Opening Ceremony will take place on Sunday 19 October and the Victory Banquet will be held on Saturday 1 November. Play in both series, Open and Women's, will start on Monday 20 October with the quarter-finals beginning on Sunday 26 October. There will be a new World Championship event - the World Transnational Open Teams played from Monday 27 to Friday 31 October.

Hammamet: the destination of choice for holiday makers

Tunisia, the most relaxed North African country, its head in the Mediterranean and its feet in the Sahara, over 3,000 years of glamorous history, only two hours by plane to the major European capitals. In addition to all facilities you would expect in any top hotel, there is a Thalassotherapy centre. For those unfamiliar with thalassotherapy, it is the use of heated seawater or mud packs for both prevention and cure of medical conditions. There is a wide range of sporting facilities either in or nearby the resort, and along with the standard activities such as tennis, golf and swimming, you can try your hand at camel-riding. The Hotel Complex Les Orangers

World Transnational Open Teams

A new World Championship, the World Transnational Open Teams, will be played during the second week of the next World Championships (Bermuda Bowl and Venice Cup) in Hammamet, Tunisia. The tournament will take place in the Hotel Azur complex.

Players who fail to qualify in the Bermuda Bowl or Venice Cup won't have to pack their bags and go home. They can play this new event. This will be a multinational Championship which means that team members do not have to come from the same country. All players who fail to qualify for the quarter-finals will he eligible. The conditions of contest will be written so that those who are eliminated in the quarter-finals also will be able to join the event. Other teams, whether national or transnational, who wish to participate in this exciting new event will be able to do so (subject to approval by the WBF Credentials Committee), by contacting their NBO and requesting nomination.

There will be separate classifications for mixed teams and women's teams, and if there are at least 20 teams made up of Seniors players a separate event for Seniors will also be organized. Otherwise there will be a separate classification for the Seniors within the field. The qualifying stages will be held from Monday to Thursday (or Friday afternoon) of the second week with the top teams qualifying for the knock out phase to be played on the Friday and Saturday. There will be alternating starting times, one day 11.00 hrs. the next 14.00 hrs, and so on, with four matches per day. This will give all players some mornings and some evenings free for other activities.

SYSTEMS

This Championship will be designated as a WBF Category 3 event, which means that no complicated systems will be permited.

FORMAT

The Championship will be played using a Swiss format of 10-board matches. 16 matches will be played to qualify for the finds and two more matches on the Friday morning will then determine the other overall positions. There will be four matches a day.

DROP-IN RULES

All teams are expected to start playing on Monday with the following exceptions:

When a proposed pre-registered team is reduced to less than 4 players because one or more of the team are still playing in the Bermuda Bowl or Venice Cup quarter-final stage, that team has a bye and will enter the Open Teams Championship only after the quarter-finals are concluded and sufficient of the above-mentioned players have become eliminated from the event. Should an insufficient number of players be so eliminated, then the proposed team will be unable to participate in the Open Teams Championship. No additional players may be added to such a proposed team once the Championship has begin.

All players eliminated from the quarter-finals of the Bermuda Bowl or Venice Cup are entitled to form a team and to enter the World Transnational Open Teams on Tuesday 28 October. Such teams must consist exclusively of players who were eliminated from the Bermuda Bowl or Venice Cup quarter-finaIs. Other than this, no new teams may be proposed after the Championship has begun or after the quarter-final stage of the Bermuda Bowl or Venice Cup has been completed, However one or two defeated quarter-finalists players, if pre-announced, may join on Tuesday a team which started play on Monday, up to a maximum of 6 players in any given team.

Teams joining the Championship on Tuesday, as described above, will enter with a carry over.
