When USA1 faced England, the American East/West pair forged to 4♥ in a contested auction. This evoked a sacrifice in 4♠. The bidding and play are documented in Ron Klinger's match report. After collecting 500, West (John Kranyak) consoled South (Andrew Woodcock) with the news that the loss would not be great (very sporting) as 4♥ was a make. Wrong.
The defence should not be too difficult against 4♥. The emphasis should obviously be about collecting tricks in spades and diamonds. After three winning tricks, a third round of diamonds is enough to declarer. Forced to ruff in dummy, declarer can no longer deal with North's twice guarded trump king. |
