Closing Remarks
Those of you who observe many things in life probably noticed that
the car licence plates in our province say: Je me souviens - I remember.
At the conclusion of the first full scale World Championships held
in Montreal, we have lots to remember. Although attendance was less
than expected, those of you who came here had a chance to sample
everything that Montreal could offer and, I believe, to have had
a great time. This event proved that great cooperation between the
WBF, the ACBL and the CBF is beneficial to all of us.
The results, the success, the victories of this tournament are
well known by now. We are indebted, of course, to the WBF staff
for their usual excellent service but these Championships couldn't
have taken place without the dedicated support of hundreds of Montreal
volunteers. Time does not permit me to mention all their names,
so with your permission, I will call upon the Chairmen of the Organization
Committee to step forward and accept a plaque in recognition
on behalf of all the volunteers:
Dr. Tibor Bertalan and Agi Bertalan
Réjean Blanchette
Jean-Guy Doust
Monique Laurin
Barbara Corcoran
Jean Castonguay
Roger Dunn
Brian Fraser
Jean Beaulieu
Cecile Rodier
Guy Lapointe
Marie Retek
For the rest of your lives you can remember this moment and the
past two glorious weeks with pride.
At this point I would like to pay a special tribute to two great
Montrealers who help to put Montreal on the bridge map over the
years:
Ralph Cohen who has served us in many ways and was for several
years CEO of the ACBL.
Johnny Wiser, the most knowledgeable, diplomatic and well-liked
tournament director, who is responsible as well for developing the
next generation of directors including Henry Cukoff and Solly
Weinstein.
To José Damiani who made this event possible, to
our sponsors, Tourism Montreal and Power Corporation, our heartfelt
thanks.
To our friends who came from near and far we
trust that you have enjoyed yourselves, collected lots of pleasant
memories. I wish you bon voyage and hope you will return to us soon.
