This new event was played as a Swiss tournament followed by semi-finals and final matches in order to determine the Gold, Silver and Bronze medallists. The Bronze Medal went to the losing semi-finalist which finished with a higher placing in the Swiss.
15 matches of Swiss were played prior to the semi-finals. The semi-finals were played over 30 boards and the final over 36 boards.
The winner of the Swiss had a free choice of opponents for the semi-finals from amongst the other three qualifying teams.
The defeated quarter-finalists from the Olympiad could join the field at match number 5 with a VP total equal to average VPs of the first 10 placed teams after the first four matches.
Teams that joined the World Mixed Teams Championship after the conclusion of the Olympiad quarter-finals did not play each other in the first match in which they participated.
All in all, 86 teams took part in what was generally described as a quite successful launch of the new competition.
