Yesterday was one of the most dramatic in
the history of these Championships as several of the teams at
the top of the table had a bad attack of nerves. Whilst that
was not true in the case of USA I, who did more than
enough in their three potentially difficult matches and are
almost home and dry, it could also have applied to both Thailand
and Israel had they not suffered heavy defeats in the
final round of the day. Nevertheless they are both still in
a strong position.
|
Canada
started the day with a great victory over The Netherlands
and looked safe, but then they were sensationally defeated 101-2
IMPs by USA I and reacted badly to that in the following
round. Norway took advantage to move into a tie with
Israel and are also in a strong position.
Apart from their mauling by Canada, the Dutchmen also
went down to New Zealand - remember we told you there
are no easy matches at this level - and they and Canada
will need the bridge gods to be smiling on them today if they
are to have any chance of qualifying. |
