The event was instituted in 1962, when the 1st World Pairs Championship took place in Cannes, France. Pierre Jais and Roger Trézel of France were the first champions, while in the Women event, Rixi Markus and Fritzi Gordon from Great Britain prevailed. The 1978 championships, held in New Orleans, saw the inauguration of the World Knockout Teams for the Rosenblum Cup, named in honour of the former WBF president who had died five months earlier.

The 1998 tournament is the 10th event of the series and the reigning champions - the 1994 winners - are:

Rosenblum Cup: USA - Seymon Deutsch, Michael Rosenberg, Chip Martel, Lew Stansby, Roger Bates and Gaylor Kasle. McConnell Cup: USA - Marinesa Letizia, Sue Picus, Judi Radin, Rozanne Pollack, and Jillian Blanchard.


1994 World Open Pairs Champions
World Open Pairs Championship: Marcin Lesniewski, and Marek Szymanowski (Poland).

Women Pairs Championship: Bep Vriend, and Carla Arnolds(The Netherlands).


1994 World Mixed Pairs Champions
World Mixed Pairs Championship: Danuta Hocheker, and Apolinare Kowalski also of Poland.

Senior Pairs: Fred Hamilton, and Hammish Bennett (USA). Senior Teams: Nissan Rand & Moshe Katz (Israel), Bob & Kees Kaiser (The Netherlands), and Karl Rohan & Franz Barata Austria.
