IOC Grand Prix


In June 1995 the World Bridge Federation became a member of the Olympic family as a recognized international organization.

Since then, following succesive visits by Marc Hodler, the IOC First Vice President to the World Championships in Beijing, Rhodes and Hammamet, the progress of bridge towards its entry into the Winter Olympic Games will pass through the otganization of the International Olympic Committee Grand Prix which was requested, and will be presided over, by Juan Antonio Samaranch, President of the International Olympic Committee.

The Grand Prix will be held at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne.

The Opening Ceremony will be held at 18.00 hrs on Monday 7 September 1998, and the event will be concluded with the Closing Banquet at 19.30 hrs on Friday 11 September 1998.

Participating in the event will be the countries which have won the Olympiads throughout the 40-year old history of the World Bridge Federation. The WBF was founded in 1958, while bridge Olympiads were introduced in 1960.

The format will be a round robin of 5 matches of 20 boards and the first two teams will qualify for the 60-board final.

The prize money will be $20,000 for the winner, and $10,000 for the runner-up.

The matches will be transmitted on Bridge Vision in the Museum's Auditorium and reported on 10 Internet sites across the world, as well as by a number of television channels. The event will also be reported in 3,000 bridge press newspaper columns.
